Philana Roberts '04Career/Education: A native of Mahaicony, Guyana, a small fishing village in a country along the Atlantic coast of South America, Philana Roberts graduated from St. Olaf in 2004 with a major in interdisciplinary fine arts. She chose St. Olaf for the sense of community, spiritual environment, music program and opportunities to study abroad- which she did on both the Eastern Caribbean Interim and the Global Semester. On campus she performed in the Gospel Choir and in the Percussion Ensemble, and also served as a junior counselor and diversity celebrations coordinator. "St. Olaf is a learning environment where you will be challenged academically, encouraged to step out of your comfort zone and supported every step of the way," she says.

"Having come from Guyana, I was nervous about choosing a college where my views would be accepted. At St. Olaf, the students were sincerely interested in my cultural background and always wanted to know more about me."

Personal: Philana enjoys the arts, studying world religions, scuba diving and traveling. In her free time she likes to try new restaurants and is always planning her next trip. She has traveled widely in her life, including to Suriname, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Switzerland, Turkey, Egypt, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Korea-and even northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
