ANNOUNCING THE 2008
WOODROW WILSON VISITING SCHOLAR
ROBERT L. MUEHLENKAMP
“Social Justice Activist and Trade Union Organizer”

Biographical Information
Bob Muehlenkamp might well be described as a change master. He has spent his career—which continues —working on behalf of “the people” to promote more fair and just lives. A resident of Maryland, but with strong Midwest connections, Muehlenkamp has been employed in a variety of roles, ranging from Vice-President of the National Hospital and Health Care Employees Union to Director of Organizing for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to, more recently, Senior Labor Advisor to Governor Howard Dean’s presidential campaign and founder of several social justice and anti-war campaigns.
Muehlenkamp describes himself as a contract negotiator and trade union leader with extensive experience organizing workers in many different industries. He was founder of the “Wake Up WalMart” campaign and co-founder of U.S. Labor Against the War in Iraq. Muehlenkamp is also an educator, in both a broad and a traditional sense of the word. Much of his union work has included educational campaigns to raise public awareness; the “Wake Up WalMart” campaign falls into this category. In addition he has taught undergraduate courses at the University of Maryland’s Academy of Leadership and in a leadership development program for elected union officials at Cornell University.
Muehlenkamp holds a B.A. degree from Marquette University and an M.A. from the University of Chicago. He was a University of Wisconsin Ph.D. student in the late 1960s and attended the University of Maryland Law School in the early 1970s.
