D.C. Connections Externship 2012

Building relationships and exploring possibilities with Ole Alums.

alumni working and living in the area.

Participate in events and job shadowing activities that will allow you to meet a variety of Ole alums working in nonprofits, for-profits, NGOs, government agencies, and political offices.

  • CEL staff members will work with selected students to identify two job shadowing sites related to your interests.  Last year, students shadowed with alums working with D.C. United (professional soccer team), Head Start, Foreign Agricultural Services, USAID, Good Shepard Housing and Family Services, CSPAN, National Institutes of Health, and more!
  • Students will stay at Luther Place Steinbruck on N Street and, along with alumni events and job shadowing, will have an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation about the role Luther Place and the Steinbruck Center play in addressing issues of homelessness and poverty in D.C. 
  • Selected students will participate in seminars to prepare for the onsite activities, as well as reflection discussions during and after the experience.  CEL staff will guide students through the experience and will support students in following up with the connections they make during their time in D.C.
  • Each participant will contribute $200 toward the total cost of the program. All remaining costs are covered, including flight from Minneapolis, housing, food and transportation.  

To apply, submit a two page document to OleRecruiting no later than 5pm on Wednesday, February 8th, 2012: 
  • On page one, include your one-page resume
  • On page two, list the URL where we can find your video statement of interest and the name and contact information for one faculty reference.
    You read it right!  Instead of a standard cover letter we want you to provide a 45-60 second video of yourself explaining your interest in the D.C. externship and how it will help you in your career exploration.  Doesn't have to be a high quality production! Just shoot a video using a camera phone, flip camera, fancy HD camera (and if you don't have access to any of the options above, stop by the CEL) – whatever you have on hand – and tell us a little bit about yourself and why you want to participate in the D.C. externship program. Use YouTube. No formal film skills?  No problem. We promise not to judge you on your video skills. Selections will be made and students will be notified by mid-February.
